The Sorting Brain

Your brain makes roughly 35 000 categorisation decisions every day — every time you reach for a cup instead of a plate, or call a dog a dog and not a cat, you are running the same decision tree that biologists use to sort the five kingdoms. Scientists did not invent categorisation: they borrowed it from a brain that had been doing it for 200 000 years.

What you'll unlock

1Explain how choosing a different purpose produces different groups from the same set of objects
2Sort a set of objects by two different criteria and identify which objects moved and why
3Build a two-level nested hierarchy and name the shared trait that defines each level
